It’s time that won’t come back.

It’s time that won’t come back.

Dear Rookie,

If you decide to join a meeting or are asked to be in one, then make it worth your while. After all, it’s time that won’t come back.

One approach is to do the bare minimum to be present, be noticed, and do other stuff literally or mentally be elsewhere.

The other approach is to make the best use of it such that you add value, get value, and feel valued (phrase borrowed from a very senior leader I was listening to).

You are new, so there’s so much to be gained from simply getting folks to know you, putting a face to the name, learning more about the topic that will be handy later, or just observing how things work—team dynamics, decision-making, etc. There’s lots to selfishly benefit from by being engaged, even when you’re not the most important person in the meeting.

It’s like what my other guru, Albus Dumbledore said, “We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.” 😉
